Implementation of an automatic, on-demand Mobile Network Operator (MNO) selection mechanism on Android devices

Samuel Liniger received the KuVS 2014 award for the best Bachelor Thesis, for his Thesis “Implementation of an automatic, on-demand Mobile Network Operator (MNO) selection mechanism on Android devices”.
The mobile communication industry considers the call termination an MNO-internal decision. Thus, this results in a de facto monopoly, since only the MNO of the callee can terminate his calls. Thus, an automatic MNO selection mechanism was developed to reside on the callee‘s smart-phone. This Bachelor Thesis defines and prototypes such an MNO
selection solution on Android based smart-phones, to select the MNO on-demand remotely in an automatic manner, providing the means to break this monopoly. To proof the applicability of the proposed solution it has been evaluated with respect to its efficiency in terms of energy, time, and bandwidth consumption.
